After the successful launch of our free webinar series, we are pleased to announce our sixth session! It will take place on Tuesday, 24th June at 12:00 pm (noon) CEST. This session will feature a presentation by Stephanie Metzger, Policy Advisor at the Royal Society of Chemistry. She will explore the challenges and opportunities in the regulatory framework around per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, with a special focus in Europe.
PFAS are a group of chemicals used in thousands of products, including water electrolysers. However, some have been linked to a range of serious health issues, which highlights the need to create and enforce PFAS laws and regulations, ensuring compliance from both manufacturers and users of fluorinated “forever chemicals”. This session counts on the support from the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Stephanie Metzger is a science policy and communication expert. She uses her policy expertise to navigate the intersection of economic growth, sustainability, and technological change in society. She also has a strong interest in building links between academia and the broader world to develop forward-looking approaches to development. This is reflected in the YouGov report, the first-ever survey of UK public attitudes towards PFAS “forever chemicals”, which she has co-authored.

Our project coordinator, Pau Farràs, inaugurated our webinar series by exploring the opportunities in impure water electrolysis, offering a promising avenue for producing green hydrogen in a more sustainable way. This was followed by our researcher Suhas Nuggehalli Sampathkumar from EPFL, Switzerland, who helped us understand a recently published paper on simulated membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) to enhance the efficiency of water electrolysis.
María Jaén, European Hydrogen Research Leader at EPRI Europe, also joined us to discuss the potential of hydrogen valleys for decarbonisation. Our first multi-speaker webinar, organised in collaboration with our partner the Jožef Stefan Institute, in Slovenia, we explored innovations in scaling up non-PGM catalysts for energy conversion. Lastly, our researcher Ariana Serban presented her achievements on highly stable anion exchange membrane electrolysers without platinum-group catalysts. Did you miss these sessions?
